AoE 2?. or 1?stronghold crusader and age of empires are the most fun i've had with strategy games

Don't think I ever played the first one. - Hmm.. it's really hard for me to choose between Age of Empires 3, Warcraft 3, Empire TW and TW Warhammer.
- Senior MemberPosts: 9,913Registered UsersMost time invested into one outside the TW franchise would easily be the Dawn of War series (The originals).
I had like 3k multi-player battles just in Dark Crusade alone.
But I would argue AoE2: Conquerers is still the 'best' I've played.'As a sandbox game everyone, without exception, should be able to play the game exactly as they see fit and that means providing the maximum scope possible.' - ~UNiOnJaCk~ - Senior MemberPosts: 1,602Registered Users
Not only was the gameplay fantastic. The storytelling was second to none. The story of both Myth and Myth II was just unbelievably great. One of the darkest and saddest fantasy IPs that I know of.Myth 2 is definitely up there. - Senior MemberPosts: 1,602Registered Users
Another classic. Didn't really like Soulstorm, the flying units was a bad idea IMO. But yea Dark Crusade was a blast. I just hated playing against the Necrons, they were so freaking strong in DC. They nerfed them into bearable by the time Soulstorm rolled around though. Most time invested into one outside the TW franchise would easily be the Dawn of War series (The originals).
I had like 3k multi-player battles just in Dark Crusade alone. - TWWH hands down. It's also only just beginning its journey.
- If you take out nostalgia (because I just CAN NOT play Civ2 now despite what it meant to my life and because if we go *way* back I loved Utopia on the Amstrad) then CK2 was something I never really expected in gaming. I owned it for a year before I bothered to play it. It took 8 hours of you tube watching (the tutorial sucks) just to understand it. It was amazing.
Other paradox are good, but not the same.
Total Wars of the past beat those other paradox games for longevity but I am happy I own them all.
But I genuinely believe TW:Warhammer is the best.
I think it beats CK2.
I can't say anything better. I also think it gets better with every expansion.Flag0·Like - Senior MemberPosts: 1,602Registered Users
Out of curiosity did you ever get a chance to play the Myth series? Since you'd probably be old enough to have been playing strategy games in 1999 if you played Civ 2.If you take out nostalgia (because I just CAN NOT play Civ2 now despite what it meant to my life and because if we go *way* back I loved Utopia on the Amstrad) then CK2 was something I never really expected in gaming. However wherever this thread may get moved to, my all time favourite strategy - mostly dominated by RTS.
Total war (with WH being my favourite by far!)
Cnc (with prooobably Red alert.. 2 as the best)
Dawn OF war (SP - goes to DoW2, MP goes to DoW1)
Age of Empires (mythology takes the crown here)
Blizzards 'Crafts (Warcraft 3, hands down)
XCom Enemy unknown
Age of Wonders 3 gets a mention too.
If I HAD to choose, probably go with Total War: Warhammer for sheer hours played.Check Out my Mods:

I went to uni in 99 so game playing curtailed a bit. I remember disliking RTS because I am a thinker and in my view only turn based was *pure* maybe that's how I missed it ..

Kingdom Under Fire. My first one, or the one I remember being first. It's probably not even a strategy game, but it felt like one. More like a hybrid of genres. With a thread popping up pointing out supposed flaws in the current Warhammer Total War game.
I wanted to get peoples opinions on the best strategy/tactics game of all time in their opinion.
Mine is easy, and really no contest in my view. The only game that I've ever played that kept me entranced for over a decade is Myth II: Soulblighter. The first Myth had a better story, but the modding tools and community of Myth II was incredible.
What's everyone else's favorite game?.. Also, anyone else remember Myth II, or is everyone here too young?
Also want to note, that while I don't think WTW will ever unseat Myth II for me, it's the only game that has the 'potential' to match it that I've played. WTW does need some work to get their though. I thought that HoI2 was better than CK2. DoW1 is definitely my favorite 'traditional' rts, with on map resources and building based play. I personally preferred the Myth series to that.. also Final Fantasy Tactics was probably as much strategy as it was RPG, which was another gem.shogun 2 or medieval 2.. pffff. i played more and better shogun 2 that game was great. from the music,to the real samurai quotes,to the shamefurr dispray,to the ninjas, the speeches etc..

Top candidate for me is probably Civilization IV. The game system is extremely deep and difficult to balance if you want to actually win. Its fun, too.
Rome: Total War has to be near the top of the list due to it's influence. I love TWarhammer, but the series would never have flourished without Rome paving the way.
Honorable mention is Crusader Kings II by Paradox. Very unique and fascinating game.
Starcraft & Warcraft III are also in my favorites list. - I'm assuming Football Manager doesn't really count..?
My initial thought was Medieval 2, especially once people retrofitted the original campaign with units from Kingdoms. Stainless Steel and later Third Age as mods added so much extra to those games for me.
Red Alert 2 is the other one that Ice sunken a lot of time into in the past, and I look on as fondly as absolute classics. Simple but with so many strategic options. The add-on for it wasn't great, but the original was superb.
I found World in Conflict too late to do much in MP with it, which is one reason I'm so disappointed they never made a sequel. - Fantasy: Sword of Aragon or Master of Magic
WW2: Kampfgruppe
Sci Fi: Master of Orion
Napoleonic Era: lots

I like TWW too.. I adore the IP, and I think it will be fantastic at the end. I have a lot of issues with the game presently. But most of them are moddable, and by the time the final installment rolls around, I'm sure the modability will be opened up quite a bit.Fantasy: Sword of Aragon or Master of Magic

They plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a wasteland, they call it peace.
Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges.
The more numerous the laws, the more corrupt the government.
I found Rome a city of filth covered marble and left it a pile of rubble. - Me - While all of the games mentioned here are naturally very good strategy games, I'm going to go with something completely personal.
It might sound weird, but I've never played a game that would convey the cold horror of inhospitable space as good as Sword of the Stars (1 & 2). I get chills every time I fire one of those up. All of the other sci-fi strategy games set in space feel faked and overly optimistic.
The games had great lore, too. Mostly hidden.
Too bad that the second part flopped, was such a mess, and was never truly fixed. I cry a little every time I think about it. - Warlords: Battlecry II.
A bit buggy, and balance was a mess, but even the first installment had nine completely different factions and persistent leveled heroes fit for an RPG that gave it limitless replay value. The third was a bit of a step back in many ways, but the second was epic. The original's demo featured more varied game play than it's contemporaries had in their full games using just one map, two factions, and only a few classes. - Gotta say, Myth 2 and Myth 1 also had absolutely phenomenal music. Honestly, every several years, I still dig out the game and play it.-Forum Terms and Conditions: https://forums.totalwar.com/discussion/172193/forum-terms-and-conditions#latest

HomeAlternative15 Amazing Games Like Age of Empires You Can Play
Since the first Age of Empires game released back in 1997, the game has been comfortably sitting on the throne when it comes to the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games genre. The game covers the eras from the gritty Stone Age and Iron Age all the way to the ruthless age of colonialism in North and South America.
Age of Empires is all about the players forming their own army, managing resources, building their empire and waging a war against opponents to conquer them. The game allows a player all the freedom to walk their own path and decide how they want to conquer the in-game world. The smarter you are, the bigger the threat you become to your foes.
If you have been looking to get into strategy games or simply are looking for a similar experience to sink your teeth into, then you are the right place. Here is our list of 15 cool games similar to Age of Empires:
1. Age of Mythology
Ensemble Studios, who created Age of Empires decided to make a spin-off series based on mythological beliefs. Unlike the Age of Empires, which is based on historical events, this game takes place in Atlantis and it focuses on the famous Greek, Egyptian and Norse myths and legends.
Marv command and conquer. When deployed the Rig serves as a repair bay for GDI's vehicles that can be packed up should the Rig be needed elsewhere.
Much like the Age of Empires, the formula of building an army, managing resources and conquering the opposing civilizations remains the main focus of the game. The player has to choose and play from one of the three civilizations: Greek, Egyptian, and Norse. Skyrim vampire lord clothing mod. Each civilization has its own religion and culture. The game lets you choose your major God, based on your chosen empire and as you progress to the next age, you unlock minor Gods which grant special abilities to the players.

2. Sid Meier’s: Civilization VI
Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. The game starts with you being a part of a simple nomadic tribe as you build your resources, evolve, and turn into a world dominating superpower. The Civilization series of games has always been one of the toughest strategy games and if you like a challenge, you are definitely going to enjoy this one. My love for Civilization VI starts with its graphics and music selection which give this game an extra dimension.
When it comes to gameplay, prepare your minds to be blown away by the depth of strategy involved in this game. The game brings everything to the table, from religion to nation building to espionage to diplomacy, it’s got everything. The game allows you to build a country that you want to, thanks to hundreds of thousands of choices that you can make. That also makes this game a little bit overwhelming for the beginners. However, if you have time to invest and you love strategy, this is the game that you cannot ignore.

3. Starcraft 2

The game is set in a 26th-century science fiction universe, where the focus is on a galactic struggle between four different species for total universe domination. The game was split into three parts during development in order to tell a complete story.
It offers a non-linear gameplay, where the player chooses to play as one of the three species known as Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. The main game “Wings of Liberty” offers the story of Terran, whereas the two expansion packs offer the stories of Protoss and Zerg.
In the game, you assume the total control of your units and are required to come up with the best strategies with the given resources in order to survive this inter-galactic war.

4. Rise of Nations
Rise of Nations is developed by Big Huge Games and features 18 civilizations and 8 ages of world history. It is consistently ranked and considered to be one of the best games of all time in the real-time strategy genre.
The key element of Rise of Nations’ gameplay is focused on the concept of “territory”. The area near the player’s settlements is considered their territory, and players can construct different buildings only within their territory or their friends’.
The aim of the player is to progress and advance to the most modern age in order to gain access to better weaponry and attack their opponents more efficiently, to either conquer them or wipe them off completely.

5. Command and Conquer: Tiberium Alliances
Command & Conquer is based on the Westwood’s strategy game called Dune 2. The most important aspect of this series is its focus on the campaigns of various factions in a single central storyline.
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Alliances is a military strategy game with MMO elements. The player gets to choose their sector in the world to start in, from there they start to build and grow their military base. The game allows the player to construct buildings, gather resources and engage in battles against enemy camps in order to survive and flourish.

6. Empire Earth
Similar to the Age of Empires series, Empire Age is a history-based real-time strategy game. Spanning over 500,000 years of world history, the game begins from a pre-historic era and ends at the nano age. The game requires players to gather resources to construct buildings, populate their civilizations with citizens, and conquer opposing civilizations. The game also includes an extensive map editor for the players to create their empires in whatever design they wish to.
One of the most unique and innovative systems in the game is the “Morale’ system, which affects individual unit statistics. Another new concept the game offers is its “Hero” system. Heroes can be built at the town center or capital. There are two types of heroes, Strategist heroes who heal surrounding units and can demoralize enemy units while Warrior heroes give morale to surrounding units and have a greater attack power.

7. Warcraft III – Reforged
Just like Age of Empires, Warcraft is a game series which is considered as one of the classics of RTS games. The game is developed by Blizzard, one of the biggest gaming studios in the world, takes players on a fantasy journey where they can command exquisite creatures the Night Elves, Undead, Orcs, and Humans. Players go through an epic journey where they can choose any faction and build their base, assemble an army, and recruit powerful heroes to lead the charge.
The latest game in the series, Warcraft III – Reforged is available for pre-order right now and will be available to play at the end of the year. The new game will bring a thorough visual overhaul, a suite of contemporary social and matchmaking features, and more. The best part about pre-purchasing this game is that players will be able to play older Warcraft III games including “Warcraft III – Reign of Chaos” and “Warcraft III – Frozen Throne” for free. So you have plenty to play before the new game hits the market.

8. Empire

The title developed by Good Game Studios is set in a medieval age, where the players slowly build their empire from ground up and turns it into a juggernaut that enemy players would think twice before attacking.
The aim is to build castles, trade with other players, raise an army and conquer your enemies. Keeping a full control over your units, building a position, coming up with the battle techniques and thinking your strategies for combat, is what Empire sets out to accomplish and succeeds at.

9. The Settlers Online
Developed by BlueBite, The Settlers is a free to play browser-based real-time strategy game which has a few in-game purchases. The Settlers Online introduces brand new additions and improvements to the genre. It features a world where players have to collect resources and complete in-game missions to build their own medieval kingdom where they can capture territories and explore.
The game is inspired by the famous Settlers series but the online realm and MMO elements add a whole another layer of depth to the concept. The game offers lots of content to unlock, tons of levels to progress through, various bandit camps to obliterate, and interaction with human players in the world, who we can either befriend or wage a war against.

10. Bad North
When I saw the trailer for the Bad North for the first time, I was hyped. I mean the game looks drastically different from all the other strategy based games I have played and yet it’s still one of the best real-time strategy games that you can play. At first glance, the games cartoonish graphics and mellow music might fool you, but make no mistake, this is as brutal a game as they come. The game’s premise is pretty simple. You own an island and you will have to build your army and upgrade your weapons to defend that island against the horde of Vikings that are going to attack you.
Your defense strategy not only depends on your weapon and army but also on your island’s shape and size as different islands offer a different strategic advantage. The game is really fun to play. While being quite tricky, the game is not as hard as Age of Empires of Civilization VI which makes this perfect for gamers who want to play a strategy game in short bursts.
Availability: Steam ($14.99)
11. Stronghold Crusader
Even though the game follows the same pattern of gameplay as the first Stronghold game, unlike its predecessor, Stronghold Crusader is set in the Middle East during the Crusades and features new Arabian units.
Due to the Middle-East setting, farms can only be built on limited oasis grass, which ushers a rivalry among players who fight for the limited amount of farmland and resources. Other than farms, there are other resources to gather, like iron ore, quarry, and marshes. These resources are deposited in their reserves and players can either sell or use these resources for a better defense against attacks.
Availability: Steam ($49.99)
12. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a prequel to the classic Homeworld games which are known for its real-time strategy gameplay. The new games take you to the deserts of Kharak where you assemble your army and lead them to victory on the shifting sand. The game takes place long before the original Homeworld games, where you and your civilization is trying to survive in a harsh desert environment while fighting the technologically advanced religious fanatics.
Being a prequel to the popular Homeworld games, it neither feels too different nor too overshadowed by the franchise. The gameplay feels totally fresh as does the storyline. Still, you get a glimpse of the older games here and there giving you a right amount of nostalgia shots. The game has received praise from critics and players alike and if you want an Age of Empire like RTS game, this is definitely the one to get.
Availability: Steam ($49.99)
13. 0 A.D.
0 A.D. is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy game, which is still under development by Wildfire Games. The game is set between 500 B.C. and 1 B.C. for the first part, and a planned second part for the years 1 A.D. to 500 A.D
0 A.D. lets the players build their base and train their army. The game also features other elements such as combat and technology research. It offers twelve different civilizations, each of the civilization is represented at their best. During the game, the player will not advance through time, but from village phase over town phase to city phase. The phases represent the size of settlements in history. Every phase unlocks new units, buildings, and technologies.

14. Tropico 5
Tropico 5 is a nation builder real-time strategy game where you develop your island from a tribe to a powerful empire. The game starts pretty easy as you can start creating plantations to grow crops and then export them to earn money which can be then utilized to improve your island’s tech. The game starts you back in the 20th century and you work your way to the modern era, all the while developing your island to make it stand against its enemies.
What I love about Tropico 5 is that your problems are not just war but also politics and economics. That makes the game a little more nuanced and more fun to play. The game also brings a multiplayer mode which allows you to start building an island with your friends. You and your friends can compete with each other to see which of you brings the most benefit to the island. You can buy Tropico 5 right now or wait for the latest version “Tropico 6” which is just around the corner.
Availability: Amazon ($9.99)
15. Total War: WARHAMMER II
If you love destruction as much as RTS gameplay than you are going to love “Total War: Warhammer II”. The game brings a breathtaking narrative campaign, set across the vast continents of Lustria, Ulthuan, Naggaroth, and the Southlands. The game is the second chapter in the trilogy so you will need to play the first game or have a working knowledge of its history to enjoy the game even more.
You will play as one of the eight legendary lords of four races where your main aim will be to develop and lead your army to disturb the giant vortex and foil the progress of other races. Each race has their own benefits and drawbacks and you will have to live with them once you choose one. The game features one of the biggest world maps that you can find in an RTS game with some of the best-looking aesthetics. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t play this game.

weakest will be all the horde factions, they kind of appear, try to do their thing, but allways get destroyed every single time, no exception in any of my campaigns.
so if we count non horde factions only, its a bit harder to decide. its one of those factions that have potential to be wiped out early, or contained in their capital for ever: skaven, skarsnik, clan angrund.. but it also can happen to most other factions like empire, bretonnia, greenskins in badlands, sometimes even VC, but thats less consistent.
I think the weakest factions will see alot more variations than strongest, but its not as bad as it sounds. the most important parts are that there is SOME variation and that there actually will be strong empires to fight against in lategame 'age of peace?'
feel free to point out my errors, I'd like to improve my english - I think the Druchii will be taking the Dwarfs place in ME as strongest faction. They can get insane slave economies with no public order issues because AI and have no real threats whatsoever inside Naggaroth. Get ready for endless full shade stacks pouring into Ulthuan and the Old World.

Beastman - edited October 2017Easiest player campaign: Chaos
Hardest: Empire
Best performed AI: depending on aversion setting on ME.
Worst performed AI: depending on aversion setting on ME.
Disregarding aversion setting, best performed AI: Chaos
Worst performed AI: Empire (same as Game 1)
AI Wood Elves have almost no role in campaign as they are isolationist, except there are some scripts to change that (such as those interactions with High Elves) or they are directed by player as their ally.
I dont think beastmen are the weakest. i mean they come in great numbers.En single :
Chaos
Lizardman
Dwarf
High Elf
Dark Elf
Skaven
Vampire
Norsca
Bretonnia
Empire
Orcs and Goblins
Woodelf
Beastman- I can guarantee that Beastmen will be the weakest faction.
Strongest will be either Dwarfs or Malekith. Very few threats and a large area to expand in.Rig
CPU: i5 3570k 3.4GHz
GPU: Radeon RX 480 8GB
RAM: 8GB 1600mhz - I think horde factions (Chaos and BM) are going to be pretty easy, just very time consuming for the player.
'Normal' factions that are going to struggle are probably Greenskins (good luck dealing with high tier DE and HE armies), VC and WE.
Demand more love for Empire, Greenskins and Beastmen! Playable Middenland with Cult of Ulric! Expanded Beastmen roster with Ghorgon and Jabberslythe! Bring back Black Orcs variants and Orc Big Boss heroes! - edited October 2017The problem is that horde armies like Vampire Counts are punished by the supply lines mechanic pretty hard.
Armies that can pour a lot of elite power into one army are favoured by supply lines.
They could compensate if they tuned upkeep for those factions I guess. - Flag2·2Like

People seem to have forgotten the horror of the green tide after they releasedWhy does everyone think the wood elfs are weak? Their unit roster is very capable- Kroqgar will be one of the most dominant ones.
Why? He starts in a Corner, all threads come from a single direction. First challenge are skaven, which are easy..then undead.. which are easy for them. - Senior MemberPosts: 17,990Registered Users
Only if they don't readjust the Skaven's AR values.Kroqgar will be one of the most dominant ones.

First challenge are skaven, which are easy..then undead.. which are easy for them.Flag0·Like - According to the starting positions and strength of armies due to auto resolve I would say Kroq Gar and Malekith will be the two most powerful factions.
Third place is probably Dwarfs.
But it also depends on auto resolve.
If they fix it for Skaven, I could see Clan Pestilens doing very well too! - Junior MemberPosts: 1,109Registered UsersEasiest: Dwarves
Hardest: Greenskinz.
Why?
Because Dwarves have OP units and OP Economy with a weaker enemy to the south and a mediocre enemy to the north.
Greenskinz will have to contend with the OP Dwarves, the powerful Lizardmen/TombKings/Araby. - A question for the OP:
Do you mean strongest/easiest faction controlled by the Player or by the AI?
For the AI I expect: Druchii, Asur, Dwarfs and Vampires to come out on top.
For a player wood Elves might be a bit annyoing to play in the long run, when you have conquered a huge part of the entire map, since they have **** garrisons and rely completely on armies to defend their territory..which is punished badly by Supply Lines on the higher diffs. However, it's not out yet and we gotta see what Changes CA might have made. - Wait, is this strongest faction in terms of strength of their army is custom and multiplayer battles? Or strongest faction in campaign? For Multiplayer/custom battles, the strongest faction on the battlefield itself IMO will probably be Dark Elves. They are just so good, they aren't well rounded like Empire per se but they do what they do very well and they do a lot of stuff. They aren't one trick ponies and they have a lot of good ****.
As for in campaign, I would say the strongest will be a tie between Dwarfs and Dark Elves, though whether they will move out of their immediate area is yet to be seen. Dwarfs because their position is pretty much the same, unlike say, Bretonnia there really is no change at all to their starting area. Sure there are the Vampires and eventually tomb Kings to the south, and sure now other races can actually challenge the Dwarfs and start conquering mountain regions, but ultimately by the time they reach those threats they will already be number one. I don't think the Dawitide is changing any time soon personally.
Dark Elves meanwhile have no threat besides some discount barbars to the north, and so can go strong and dominate their continent. Combined with the considerable strength of their armies and economy I think they will be the power of the West.
I think Lizards, High Elves(for the first 100 or so turns) and Vampires will probably fare reasonably well.
Empire will probably still suffer but who knows.
Not including horde races, I personally think the weakest race might actually be Skaven. They have such weak autoresolve, and they have no area on the map where they aren't surrounded by enemies. Pestillens, Mors, Skavenblight, Hellpit, potentially other clans, they are all alone for the most part. - if you play vanilla it will be
strongest : Dwarfs
weakest: Greenskins - edited October 2017
Wats the point? Its called speculation. You came on the thread when you saw 'no point' just to type there's no point? As if that opinion is important? C'mon man. We are busy talking about ME here. take a hike. All due respect of courseHey it's not out yet..what's the point? - The HE on Ulthuan start in a good position too as all their external threats have to be sailed to/from, their trade based economy almost rivals the DE slave based one and with all the additional factions quite possibly has the ability to out perform it.

I hope beastmen become more powerful in naggaroth, like in the lore (from what I've heard) and that chaos invades there. Then they would be fine.Dark Elves' lack of threats and free expansion into insanely rich provinces probably means they'll be a giant death empire every game. - edited October 2017I've got a sneaky suspicion vampire counts might do quite well in ME. They tend to survive quite a long time in my campaigns as the AI struggles to make headway against the attrition and fast-refilling armies, and now they'll be able to expand into the mountains as well. They won't do so quickly, building in the mountains will be slow for them, but VC campaigns have always been slow burners. So, yeah, I think they could be the tortoise to some other factions' hare.
- Strongest single player campaign factions:
Dwarf
Dark Elf
High Elf
Lizardman
Vampire Counts
Bretonnia
Empire
Orcs and Goblins
Skaven
Woodelf
Warriors of Chaos
Beastman
Note that I'm using the strongest/easiest LL for each faction. weaker/harder LLs will make the faction rating change. i.e. Grombrindal for Dwarfs. Malekith for Dark Elves. etc.
So true. The AI and even me take forever to kill off VC Cuz of the attrition filled lands. They always survive and raise new armies quickly and can hold out in like one settlement if need beI've got a sneaky suspicion vampire counts might do quite well in ME. The base corruption in their lands, wide distances between settlements and powerful garrisons make their provinces nigh on unassailable. This will basically allow them to churn out stacks without any fear of retaliation.
